Larry June – Doing It For Me

After a successful Great Escape with the legendary Alchemist last year, Larry June returns for the autumn, but this time he’s doing it for himself.

“You stay home all day, playing Call of Duty, but in reality, you don’t answer the call to handle your duty”

Starting with the 5th part of the now classic Uncle Herm series, speaking wisdom over some groovy instrumentation, leading to Magnum P.I., a wavy depiction of his elevated status, which is emphasised by the Harry Fraud produced Morning Calculations, “When you really got a goal, you gotta stick to it, I wake up early in the morning and grab my calculator”, he opens with. A Little While sounds like traditional Larry June, catered to the female fanbase, that happens to sit between two of my favourites, flowing cool over Jake One & DJ Khalil production, it helps set up the next track. As someone who wants to A&R a Larry June R&B album, Stinson Beach might be my favourite track. I don’t know why, as he speaks in the intro, I was just waiting to hear about marble worktops and Sicilian harvested Orange juice in a laid back flow, instead he turns into David Ruffin, and begins crooning, “I know, there’s things in life, that you..just can’t change, but when I’m not with you, baby girl, I don’t feel the same..”, it’s consistently great from start to finish, a result of the hours he’s put into his craft. It’s an effortless evolution of his penmanship. The mood completely shifts with the trunk-rattling Real Talk Pt.2, a grittier effort, a more assertive display over the bass-heavy beat. Track 7, Three-Piece, sees Larry June unite with popular collaborator Cardo and it’s just that, chill, catchy and encapsulates the Bay. The overall sound of this project captures essences of the Bay and West Coast in general, with his personal touch, portrayed in Where I’m Going (with it’s recognisable sample), proceeding, Meet Me In Napa, a more cinematic audio experience, almost serving as a trailer to Breakfast in Gold Coast. Track 11, Imported Couches, the early single, seemingly sounds more luxurious within the album, “What you gon’ do when then times get hard? What you gon’ do when the cheques stop coming?”, he raps, with an ability to detail a high-end lifestyle without it seeming disconnected from the listener, that shouldn’t be overlooked, adding substance with the aspirational themes to the braggadocios elements. The silk velvet texture continues with Cleaning My Spot (Interlude), a softer approach before the darker sounding, Like A Mack. I know there’s obviously another project in the works, so to be able to sequence a conceptualised body of work that feels organic, with no features (no gimmicks or reaching for streams), has to be applauded. One of the singles, Dreams, another modern day Bay-centric sound, helps complete the album on a high before the curtain closer, Money Bags, a Cookin’ Soul produced vibe, with it’s extended musicality really complimenting the project and neatly sets up for whatever is next.

Another good job Larry!

Clipse – Back By Popular Demand (Popeye’s) ft. Cam’ron (Official Video)

CLIPSE2

The much hyped collaboration finally leaks, since some information regarding tracklisting for their upcoming album ‘Til The Casket Drops’ had surfaced on the internet, there was a lot of interest in this one (even though there was a Kanye West collabo too), after Kinda Like A Big Deal ft. Kanye West was released, Popeye’s was all that people could talk about.

Dipset general Cam’ron had turned down the chance to work with the Clipse before, when invited to feature on the remix for their anthem ‘Grindin’, however now seems to be the time, many may expect a lot more, but I think the real Hip-Hop (or general Clipse/Cam’ron) fan will appreciate this for it’s classic rap feel.

[Youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_vrzuh0xKU&feature=related]

Produced by The Neptunes and featuring a hook from Pharrell Williams, this track was created especially for this concept, The Neptunes have always known how to bring the best out of the Clipse, even though they are capable to shine just as well on a Justice League, Timbaland or Kanye West beat (I beleive Pusha T is one of the few emcees that could hold his own on a Dr Dre beat), there is a present chemistry between the two and this is obviously evident with this. So, once again the Clipse have not dissapointed, ‘fly-talk’, slick word-play, they possess it all and bring it to the table with this, an extra-dimension is offered with the feature provided by Cam’ron, “I’m Pharrell (for real) with the Clipse (clips)”, is one of the lines as he provides a classic Killa Cam flow, his presence is felt on the track and helps round this record up with the appeal of a classic song.

The video is a more realistic feeling video, rather than the generic extravagant videos that we are used to seeing, I like the styles that both the Clipse and Cam’ron bring to it, the video manages to parallel the beat in terms of its appeal, a laid back, friendly atmosphere, a video that people could actually relate to.

The Clipse’s third album ‘Til The Casket Drops’ is tipped to be another classic, with features from Keri Hilson, Kanye West & more, expect more anthems from Clipse and the whole Re-Up gang.

Drake – Fear

Young Money’s White Knight, Drake, releases his critically acclaimed mixtape So Far Gone, Fear is the new bonus track available on this re-release.

Produced by DJ Khalil, this will be a critics favourite, by far a ‘special’ track, as it is the most recent we’ve heard of Drizzy since his previous mixtapes and guest features, personally I feel this song will keep his buzz consistent as fans and critics wait for the anticipated debut album ‘Thank Me Later‘.

Drake shines best when he lets his emotions out on the mic, highlighting that although his life is on an up, he still has downs, he makes his music easy to relate to for anybody listening, lines like, “I never cried when ‘Pac died, but I will when Hov’ does”, display his comfortability on record, his confidence is sky high and I do not expect any different, who wouldn’t with a hype and fanbase like his, funniest thing is that he has not even released an album yet.

Not much needs to be said about Fear, it speaks for itself.

Clipse – I’m Good ft. Pharrell Williams

The clipse return with the newrelease from their forthcoming album ‘Till The Casket Drops’.

Clipse - I'm Good

Clipse – I’m Good ft. Pharrell Williams:

I’m Good is pretty much a laid-back, feel-good track, a summer chillout tune. Typical production courtesy of the Neptunes, which is not a bad thing because it will compliment the rest of the productions by the neptunes on the album which also features production from the likes of Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and DJ Khalil (He produced Kinda Like A Big Deal ft. Kanye West).

I think this will be a success (in the USA at least) for the simple feel good factor that it possesses, it has a element of fun to it, I can see many people catching onto the vibe and I’m sure even Pharrell and the Clipse (at the time of recording) visioned people cruising in their cars playing this. You have to give the Neptunes credit for creating a song that captures the feeling of a true summer. I think it’s impact is subdued to the fact that the video for Kinda Like A Big Deal was put out first, that was more of a strong statement so people took notice.

I’m Good is like the title..Good, definitely one to add to your summer soundtrack.

Now to wake you up,

Clipse X Kanye West X Kaws - Kinda Like A Big Deal

Clipse – Kinda Like A Big Deal ft. Kanye West:

The DJ Khalil produced anthem really gave the Clipse a good entry back into the game, with the heavy feature from the self proclaimed new ‘King of Pop’..Kanye West. Pusha T & Malice really stand out lyrically, which is what they are ultimately known for, so to be on level with Mr West can only help the Virgina duo reach more success. I’m Good was good, Kinda Like A Big Deal is to be honest kind of like a big deal, the real record i want to hear is ‘Popeye’ featuring Cam’Ron, that is said to be the one, so good that it is being kept securely.
