Dappy – Straight Facts

The NDubz frontman has had his fair share of ups and downs, from reaching heights that most in the scene were unaware was possible, arena tours and plaques, to headlines, court-cases and and a prison stint. In this candid rap, he bares all..

From his NDubz days, through to the Tarzan freestyles, Dappy was no stranger to controversy, a supposed ego could have rubbed people the wrong way, could it have been a result of the superstardom, or possibly an abundance of drugs, the one thing not in question however, is his talent, that remains undeniable. He attempted to vent on No Regrets before the honest offering of Beautiful Me, unfortunately, despite it’s success (and further proof of his ability) it was not enough to make amends entirely. Whilst he faced his demons head on, the industry and the scene itself continued to develop, and upon his return from prison, he took to what he knows best to open up further and shed light on what was really happening.

This introspective cut possesses that same confidence we’re accustomed to, but from a mature and humbled position, that hunger in his voice is replaced with pain, as he begins with, “when I was sky high, not many of you wanted to see me fall, one big ego but I was mentally small, I thought I was the man..telling everybody what to do, when really they were just using me including my skrilla too”, he continues with more humility and understanding, and a sense of fearlessness as he shares more. From tabloid stories being sold, dodgy label deals to the descriptive moment of him losing his father (he’s spoken on it before but not to this level), Dappy intensely flows, reminding us who really opened some of the doors, “Talk about being terrorised..like say I’m gonna fall back, your favourite artist now..started as my support act”, before paying respects to the current leaders of the scene. The narrative of him not looking after himself, putting others first, paranoia and ultimately suffering from the leeches around serves as a foundation as he switches up into his intentions from here on.

I was concerned for his mental wellbeing, as it really can take its toll, but he seems stronger than given credit for, and though we’re yet to see whether he is still facing backlash for use of the N-word or other situations which have occurred in the past, one thing is for certain, if he has learnt from his past and continues to deliver quality content, this honesty is appreciated and he’ll find himself back at the top again for sure.

Mobo Awards controversy

The Mobo Awards appeared to be a successful event, it was a proud moment for the UK, watching the opening performance by Tinchy Stryder (with a feature from Ndubz’s Dappy), another by Chipmunk and DJ Ironik, JLS and Ndubz, you could sense the atmosphere, the british acts were claiming their position, however, even though JLS won (two), Chipmunk returned to win another, Ndubz won two awards, I was dissapointed that Sean Paul won best Reggae Artist when there were more deserving acts nominated, Bashy and Master Shortie were the two unsigned acts and I felt it would be a big acheivement for them if they won, especially Bashy as he has come a long way since his early grime mixtape days. The biggest controversy however, was the fact that Tinchy Stryder and Dizzee Rascal did not win, based on a voting system it was strange and surprising that despite the success of the UK artists, two time Number 1 charting, Tinchy Stryder who also had the Number 2 album in the country did not win, nor did three time Number 1 charting (in a row) Dizzee Rascal.

Keri Hilson who was co-presenting won as well as Beyonce, I wish I was there, I would have done a ‘Kanye’ and made my point clear, maybe next time.

I think we have taken a big step, we expected or felt that we deserved more for the clear domination that we have had on the charts this year, I was even more so annoyed that Taio Cruz came on to support Keri Hilson and sung Ne-Yo’s part for her single Knock Me Down (when he is a talented writer himself), again, maybe this is a smaller step than we thought and as long as we continue making good music and remaining consistent with our chart domination then we will scale further heights, still you cannot help but to feel for Tinchy Stryder who really deserved some recognition for his acheivements.

Until next years awards..

Tinchy Stryder – Number 1?

the question mark is because I think like everyone else in the scene that this new single has the potential to make that Number 1 spot.

Tinchy Stryder has always been the at the forefront of the Ruff Squad and Dappy is the most recognizable member of Platinum selling N-Dubz, so when you put them together, you are bound to get more than just a collaboration.

Tinchy Stryder has been in the game for a while now, his constant hard work has been paying off and after securing the number 3 spot with ‘Take Me Back’ featuring Taio Cruz, it is only right that the charts take him back and place him at the top spot, simply as not many people can say that they truely deserve it, Stryder can.

As for Number 1, it does not have the instant cathy factor that Take Me Back possessed, however it has the major feel, two of the country’s best talents coming together with a feel good song, they both add their own qualities and Dappy goes on to prove that he really is a force in the industry, I’m sure both have dealt with set backs and many laughing at the idea that they could have such impacts individualy in the music industry, with that, you can sense the eagerness, the hunger and the determination for Number 1 to be a number one.

I think this is just a start, for both Stryder and N-Dubz, both are talented enough to build upon their success so far and open the doors for more talent to shine through.

The single will be out 20th April, so you know to support that!
