Joy Crookes – Carmen

As the women continue to lead R&B/Soul to prominence, one of the most underrated of those is none other than Joy Crookes. The South London songstress has consistently delivered with her unique vocals, honest lyricism and vast musicality. It’s a couple years since her last release and with her second album Juniper due 26th September, she feeds fans with this EP, Carmen.

Carmen serves as a bitesize offering of four tracks, with longtime collaborator Blue May, that encapsulate her diverse range of artistry. Leading with the title track,

a modern take on a classic sound, as she poetically explores beauty standards and confidence, the crisp production provides the perfect bed for her captivating vocals, you can see why she has drawn comparisons to the late great Amy Winehouse. I Know You’d Kill, a song about trust which she wrote for her manager,

raises the tempo, on which effortlessly glides. It’s so rare to find current creations that can embody such nostalgic instrumentation whilst possessing these original and current day nuances. Much like the next track, Mathematics featuring legendary Grime MC Kano.

It’s such an unorthodox pairing that seamlessly matches their contrasting styles, with her emotive and vulnerable display complimented by Kano’s tone and delivery, which is refreshing to hear, similar to the last track, the bass-heavy, Pass The Salt featuring Vince Staples,

emphasised with her vocals minutely distorted, blending her sultry sound over a beautifully chaotic production, allowing the Long Beach rapper to flow naturally with one of his standout features. If this is anything to go by, you can expect her 26th September release Juniper to be another quality offering of sexy vocals and high-end production, filled with emotion, experimentation and most of all originality.

Kano – Rock N Rolla (Official Video)

There is no denying that this will be another successful single for the East London emcee, however, it is debatable whether this classifies as Grime, if not, has Kano left the scene again or are we understanding that he is an artist allowed to experiment?

In all honesty I am dissapointed with the video, the Justin Timberlake – My Love graphics add a lack of originality, which does not help the fact that Kano himself is using Autotune which has not been considered original for a while, production is similar to Tinchy Stryder’s current sound, but for feeling and feel good factor it is loaded and will definitely have everyone moving, especially in the clubs. It seems more like a buzz single, which although I feel deserved a better visual, it is different for a Grime video, it has certain elements and flavours to it which will help it stand out and make it appealing. Kano returned to the Grime scene with his previous album 140 Grime street, which although had one video and release, it did not receive the same reception as his previous two efforts, therefore it seems Kano is looking to go back and reclaim his status as not just a premier emcee but one of the countries premier artists.

Marvell – Make Noise

The Marvell boys return with the much anticipated video for their single ‘Make Noise’ (Out 1st June).

Marvell have been making a name for themselves within the underground scene for a while now individually and as a collective with mixtapes such as Late Arrival, Moneys Da Motive and the latest offering Marvell FM, each one receiving high praises for it’s combination of innovation, creativity and entertainment values.

Make Noise is the first single to be released, and the single itself is making a lot of noise as they rise further up in the game. The video is already a regular on TV, with many requesting the video proving they have a strong following.

The track is compiled with a beat that makes it’s presence known, a synth that brings pace into the track, perfectly complimented by the flow from all three emcees, Shocka leads and delivers another metaphorically driven verse, full of lyrical ability and wit, Vertex then steps up and delivers on point, obviously the fasted out of the three (if not the fastest in the scene) Double S runs side by side of the melody with the third verse adding heavily to keeping the impact of the song consistent from start to finish. I really feel that it has the same attributes as Kano – P’s & Q’s in terms of cross-over appeal, Marvell manage to come across aggressive whilst maintaining an ear-friendly sound.

Visually, directed by Vertex himself (who notably also directed the video for The Noisettes – Don’t Upset the Rhythm), it is a combination of professionalism and a youthful mind, it provides the same enjoyable feel as the track and therefore the two compliment each other, complete with effects and an Eddie Kadi cameo, Vertex is certainly making noise as one of the best prospects in the direction field.

Overall, Make Noise will is set to elevate the fly boys to further heights, they certainly deserve it with the hard work and determination that they put in but more with the talent they possess and the quality material that Marvell is delivering.
