Jacquees – B.E.D. (+ Remix)

For the past couple years, we have seen the dominance of Hip-Hop almost keeping R&B at bay, championing the new golden era of the genre, to the point that amidst an array of quality tracks, even the successful ones are not meeting their potential.

An example is Cash Money’s current star Jacquees, with his breakthrough hit, Like Baby,

as catchy as it may be, it had not fully connected, although I believe that was due to the ongoing Birdman/Lil’ Wayne dispute, as with the full support of the roster, it would have no doubt transitioned well beyond the states (Whilst he has fans across the globe, Jacquees is still relatively unknown in most parts, especially the UK), though that’s a whole ‘nother discussion, as it signifies Young Money’s relevance over it’s parent company, with the likes of Wayne, Drake & Nicki Minaj. The song itself pays homage to them and kind of fell flat at a time they were no longer synonymous with Cash Money. None the less, he has been able to do well within his hometurf, and the other issue arises that most platform’s loyalty lay with Wayne & co, and the Cash Money crooner was not heralded the same, as one would expect.

Not to make this a CM/YM piece, a firm believer that talent cannot be denied, Jacquees released more material, continuing to build his fanbase, and without that notably missing support, he’s still managed to develop his social media following, and it was not long before he had another hit on his hands. This time in the form of the B.E.D., sampling and paying homage to Avant’s classic Read Your Mind.

With his distinct voice and vocal range (I do joke that he and the UK’s Loick Essien need to have a sing-off as there’s a lot of similarities), there is no denying his ability, he’s nice with the pen too, as he flips the classic line into his own anthem for the ladies. It has since made it’s way from being a mixtape cut, to one of the rising hits, with a mad amount of shows in the process, it’s certainly the people’s favourite. The track also went onto getting the remix treatment, featuring two of the best acts around in Quavo & Ty Dolla $ign, and it does not disappoint, although sometimes a remix can overshadow, if it helps bring the young performer to more prominence then I’m all for it.

With this remix, Jacquees holds his own amongst the two heavyweights, and further proves his ability. It’s a decent visual, featuring the beautiful Keke Palmer with the cameo, which had essences of Usher getting his hair braided in the Donell Jones video (U Know What’s Up), not to mention his take on the 2Pac bathtub photoshoot, whilst the two features bring their flavour to the mix, both on the audio and visually with the styles we’ve become accustomed to from both.

A hybrid artist of sorts, comfortable rapping as he singing, though in an era full of autotune-singers, he boasts the poignant ability to truly sing with the best of them.

He recently graced the BET awards pre-show (though I think he could have been more justified on the actual show), and it was slightly disrespectful, but unprofessional for sure, as they had only cued up his remix, rather than the original version of B.E.D. which he had rehearsed to perform (with dancers and all), but these things can happen at a show of such magnitude, and the young talent showed his artistry, as he handled the situation like a veteran and even gave the crowd an acapella performance, which (for me at least) proved his showmanship further. With his album 4275 on the way, the Atlanta native is certainly looking to capitalise further on his recent success, and you can no doubt expect more fire, as his work ethic is hard to be matched, with a whole lot of music and videos to check for in the mean time.

Bow Wow – Can I Be Your Man ft. Lil’ Wayne

Since Bow Wow is now Lil’ Wayne’s label mate having recently signed to Cash Money records, these collaborations are expected, I’ve heard three tracks since he signed and this is the best one of all, the first was ok, second was the apparent first single ‘Every Other’ (produced by Cool & Dre), which has Bow sounding more like Drake, with a distinct Drake flow and lyricism, a good effort but the obvious comparisons do shadow the song’s positives, I think it is more so because Bow Wow is talented and the song did not justify that talent. Can I Be Your Man, however is a far better track, with or without the star feature.

The validity of this track cannot be confirmed, none the less it is a good song, a promising insight in what to expect from Bow Wow and Cash Money as a whole. Also, if nobody has realised all ready, this track seems to be about his previous lady, miss Angela Simmons, even if it is not, Bow Wow has taken his experiences in stride of his maturity and put together an honest and ‘real’ record.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Drake & Lil’ Wayne

It is looking like Birdman’s forthcoming album ‘Always Strapped‘ might just be his best yet, with bangers like Got A Bitch ft. Rick Ross and Written On Her ft. Jay Sean, now leaks Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne & Drake, his albums heavily depend on features, so it comes to no surprise that his new effort will also be.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne Drake:

This is not anything special, in all honesty I think his collaboration with Rick Ross is far better, however, when you have heavyweights like Lil’ Wayne and man of the moment Drake on a track then something good has to come out of it and it certainly did in this case.

Drake steals the show as he is doing on most of his features, as much as I do not like to join in with anything that becomes over-hyped, I have to give Drake his credit where due, he backs his status up well, on this record, the Cash Money trio brag to the fullest, Lil’ Wayne’s verse is fairly standard which strangely balances with Birdman’s, leaving Drake to take the spotlight with his verse and chorus, the negative of this track is that you do not even realise Birdman has a verse, it kind of gets squashed in between the Young Money boys’ features.

Money To Blow will no doubt help balance the album out which at the same time will make the track standout more, it is not fair to be too critical on this song as it does what it was intended to do, it sounds like a sequel to the chart topping Always Strapped with a new cast member which really makes the difference. Expect more records of similar stature from Cash Money founder Baby aka Birdman.

I think my own expectations have got the better of me, it is a good song but the beat is not as epic as the previous release ‘Always Strapped’, nor the other release ‘Got A B****’, but the video is a good look, nothing too over the top, a good buzz single, with cameos from Jay Sean and Mack Maine, Cash Money are on a steep uprise, Lil’ Wayne went platinum, Jay Sean has now gone platinum, up next is Drake who is expected to go Platinum, Cash Money records are really at their peak, so look out for more big things.

BIRDMAN – WRITTEN ON HER ft. JAY SEAN

After the success of ‘Always Strapped’, Cash Money boss Birdman aka Baby returns to the charts with his new record featuring Jay Sean.

Personally this sounds more like a Jay Sean record, I’ve grown up listening to Cash Money and never envisioned this, then again I did not expect to hear a Lil’ Wayne rock album, so anything is possible in music these days. The track is not bad, Birdman who (like Lil’ Wayne) is covered in tattoos, obviously had no trouble in finding inspiration for this song, Written On Her is about a girl with tattoos hence the title ‘Written On Her’, Jay Sean is added to the equation to smoothen the mix and it strangely all works, here you have this up-tempo track, which will go down well in the clubs as it would among your friends, it sounds different, the concept is new, Written On Her has a lot of appeal and was not made to make a big impact on the world, it is a feel good track taken from his forthcoming album ‘Always Strapped’, this is one of the softer tracks from the album but definitely expect more good music from Cash Money and Jay Sean.

SKEPTA – LUSH ft. JAY SEAN

“IS IT THE CHAMPAGNE DANCE..NO, THIS IS THE CHAMPAGNE TALK”

New from Skepta, taken from his album ‘Microphone Champion’, Lush has Skepta ready “to take it sl-sl-slow” with his lady of choice, produced by Skepta and featuring Jay Sean (who is Number 6 in the US charts with Down ft. Lil’ Wayne), Lush is a combination of underground and mainstream sounds gelled together, Jay Sean’s vocals help texture the mainstream sound whilst fitting to a raw underground vibe which Skepta brings, as a whole Lush is a good song, the only negative is the length of the track, another verse would have made it complete. The video is a good look, directed by Vertex (Marvell), the rising director has directed for the Noisettes and Chipmunk already, considered one of the best directors already despite his young age, Vertex’s direction most definitely compliments the track, bringing something different, it has a mainstream feel, really adds to the track in terms of visuals (without being over the top).

Lush is certainly another hit for Skepta, it is promising as we continue to expect good music from the UK’s elite artists.

Jay-Z signs Music Kidz to ROC Nation!!

This is big news people,

Music Kidz, consisting of producer Mr Shabz (who is the founder of Music Kidz) & former Reelist producer K1, emcee Swiss and singer Sef (the trio that were behind many of the So Solid Crew’s hits), have been working hard with their group, production team, label and movement.

Proof of their hard work has come when Sef himself recently announced that Music Kidz has signed to Jay-Z’s new imprint ROC Nation, this is big news for the scene and the country, it means our hard work and talents are being recognized and with such an array of talent here in the UK, it is the next step, it shows the progression we are making, recently Jay Sean signed to the one and only Cash Money Records (Home to none other than Lil’ Wayne).

The first release I’m looking forward to and have been waiting for a while is Sef and his album ‘Every Piece of Me’, after releasing ‘Out of the Ghetto‘ and the soon to come ‘Need A Hero‘, Sef has proven that he has a voice to match some of the best R&B singers out there, having already worked with the likes of platinum selling Robin Thicke on the track ‘Tonite‘, as a fan of music it is increasingly frustrating to not hear his material and his name being mentioned among the greats.

Also, Swiss, how can anyone forget his heartfelt flow on So Solid Crew’s smash ‘Broken Silence‘, Swiss then gave us ‘Cry‘, so the soon coming album ‘One In A Million’ is still antiscipated the Music Kidz are capable of classics so it is only right that they venture with ROC Nation (one of the most expensive labels created) with the legend Jay-Z himself to create more of their own history.

I’ll bring you more on this news as soon as i find out,

Shout out to Sef and the Music Kidz team!!
