Preme – Hot Boy ft. Lil’ Wayne

“..I got the whole city on lock boy, I should dread my hair the way I’m feelin’ like a Hot Boy..”

RepsUp’s Preme made an impact in 2014 (as P Reign) with his Dear America EP boasting the underground hits Realest In The City and DnF. The past couple years we got his Off The Books EP, plus a couple cuts from the OVO affiliate which helped with the rebrand. Steady working away, he returns to the forefront with one of the catchiest tracks out, Hot Boy.

For those familiar with his music thus far, it could be said he was still experimenting and finding his style, this track however, fits within what you may have heard already. I was nodding my head and humming along, as it starts of well, then I began to hear cadences I would attribute to PartyNextDoor, and Preme as a man first..isn’t the kind to bite another, but being part of the same camp, it could be a possibility, and so upon some research, it appears PND is a credited writer, so that makes sense. Back to the song though, I’m surprised it hasn’t been gaining more of a buzz, or maybe it’s just not reached England yet, either way, it’s a wavy number, and you can’t have a song titled Hot Boy and not think Lil’ Wayne (much like the late Bankroll Fresh’s smash of the same name). The inclusion of Weezy not only certifies the track but naturally adds a whole ‘nother element with the autotune heavy flow, from the sound of the inhale, back like he never left, full of quoteables as you can expect from the legend.

“Used to have some wings, had to get them shits chopped off”

The track may struggle to really translate into the plays it deserves, but it’s most likely a slow burner, despite it’s radio-friendly tempo, but more importantly it reintroduces Preme properly, and he can only continue to ascend from here forth, with his new project Light Of Day due to be released soon, it’ll be sure to offer a similar level of quality throughout. My only critique was based on not entirely knowing if it was Party on the latter part of the hook or Preme, but it’s since been confirmed (by the artist himself) that it is indeed PND, which I now I have to give credit to the blend of the vocals, because it’s an effortless transition. Overall, the song itself is a strong effort, more light hearted than his previous hits and a step in the right direction for another Canadian adding to the country’s seemingly unstoppable waterfall of talent.

The video, directed by Kid Art (who has come a long way from his breakthrough visuals for Vinny Chase), with his eye for a clean shot, and the various scenes blended together, give it some extra depth, adding to the track itself.

Ty Dolla $ign – Love U Better ft. The Dream & Lil Wayne

Despite his major success, Ty Dolla $ign is still not as praised as I believe he deserves. The man behind some of your favourite songs (Chris Brown – Loyal, for one), he has maintained his relevancy through an onslaught of features and appearances, albeit with two studio albums under his belt, unfortunately they had not connected as well as his mixtapes. Campaign was a step forward from his debut Free TC, however it was his Beach House series which really raised his profile, and so fittingly the third instalment to the series is set to be his third album also.

Maybe there is a disconnect between the mixtapes and the albums, we’re aware of the various constraints that can occur, which can affect the music, but this move clearly highlights what to expect, and with the unveiling of this new single, it might just be the album we’ve been waiting to hear from him.

Produced by longtime friend and collaborator, DJ Mustard, with the Peabo Bryson – Feel The Fire sample, which you may recognise from The Game’s (Drizzy featured) track 100. it’s not anything spectacular, but it’s definitely fitting to the Beach House collection, and serves as a good introductory single for the album. Now, I do not think this is the best we have got from Ty, in some ways, I wish it did not have the features, but commercially the inclusion of The Dream adds a particular contrast to the record, not to mention the compliment of singing alongside a fellow singer/songwriter of such high acclaim. Weezy F Baby does what we’ve come to expect, for some reason however, (not taking anything away from the song) it does sound like an old record out the stash, but it could just be that I’ve become so expectant of Ty to innovate (like his Ed Sheeran interlude) or maybe I just really want to hear the song Wiz has been previewing on Social Media.

The visuals are crisp and add some depth that the single might have lacked, amongst the cameos from Sevyn Streeter, YG, Jeremih & Trae Tha Truth, it’s always great to see Weezy, with his Lollipop-esque mirror performance, there are tones of seriousness, as what is depicted as a young Ty, sat on the stairs, as a domestic audio is played over, it does open up some narrative and for me at least makes the song (and it’s visuals) stronger.

I’m definitely going to listen to it more, as Love U Better will gain momentum on radio, hopefully it picks up on this side too, and will for sure play it’s part in setting up for the release of Beach House 3.

Chris Brown – I Can Transform Ya ft. Swizz Beatz & Lil’ Wayne (Official Video)

chrisbrownsinglecover

He’s Back, say what you want but at the moment there is no other artist like this, no other song like this either and definitely no other video, featuring Cameos from producer Swizz Beats, Mr Carter himself Lil’ Wayne and Tyrese.

Here is the official video for the first single to be released off his third album ‘Graffiti’.

The track as you already know is good, Swizzy creating what I would like to described as, “‘Wall to Wall’ on stereroids”, Lil’ Wayne understands exactly what is needed of him and he brings it in full effect, the most pressure is on Chris Brown and he delivers with ease, he has improved, he has matured and it all shows, he seems determined and confident, which is a good combination. The video is a mix of interests with the fashion, robots, martial arts and dancing, they are all nicely merged together, it has something for everyone, the guys will enjoy watching it, the girls will most likely watch it more than the guys, but over all it is a great way to return.

With the critics and haters working over time on Chris Brown since his situation with Rihanna, there is a lot of pressure on him, however with the help of other artists, the pressure is being eased, this time comes Lil’ Wayne is called into action and he delivers like only he can, with two verses, Swizz with a monster beat, a good video and it appears that Chris Brown will be back on top again in no time, R. Kelly went into work mode and locked himself in the studio when his ‘video’ incident emerged, he was behind every single major hit of that year and you could not criticize the man that was behind all your favourite songs, so Chris can come through, he is mentally stronger and can now concentrate on what he does best and this song will no doubt be another success for him, so the future is once again bright for the man Lil’ Wayne refers to as the “New Michael Jackson” (much to Omarion’s dismay).

After watching this video, it appears that Chris Brown may return as an even bigger artist than when he left, while there are many who may never forgive him, there are a lot who will and of late he is showing sincerity and the fans take to that, the record is hot, you cannot deny that, it might be his biggest track so far, personally, his private life is his private life, if I was to judge artists on their personal issues then I would stop listening to a lot of your favourite artists, Music remains Music.

Chris Brown – I Can Transform Ya (Video Trailer)

I felt to wait until the actual video was released (within a few hours), however, I decided that this trailer has me excited and so you all deserve to see it, it looks like a good video:

Bow Wow – Can I Be Your Man ft. Lil’ Wayne

Since Bow Wow is now Lil’ Wayne’s label mate having recently signed to Cash Money records, these collaborations are expected, I’ve heard three tracks since he signed and this is the best one of all, the first was ok, second was the apparent first single ‘Every Other’ (produced by Cool & Dre), which has Bow sounding more like Drake, with a distinct Drake flow and lyricism, a good effort but the obvious comparisons do shadow the song’s positives, I think it is more so because Bow Wow is talented and the song did not justify that talent. Can I Be Your Man, however is a far better track, with or without the star feature.

The validity of this track cannot be confirmed, none the less it is a good song, a promising insight in what to expect from Bow Wow and Cash Money as a whole. Also, if nobody has realised all ready, this track seems to be about his previous lady, miss Angela Simmons, even if it is not, Bow Wow has taken his experiences in stride of his maturity and put together an honest and ‘real’ record.

Lenny Williams – ‘Cause I Love You

Consider this a OneFáris Throwback track, A classic, which has been sampled twice by Kanye West for Twista – Overnight Celebrity and Jin – I Got A Love, as well as by Mobb Deep on their track Nothing Like Home and the most recent by Scarface for Girl You Know featuring Trey Songz.

I had not heard this in a very long time, I had heard the sampled tracks more in recent times and always felt that there was a familiar sample, I just never looked into it, then funnily enough Lil’ Wayne states (during an interview) that it is his most personal song, so naturally I found myself listening to it again, sounding just as amazing as the first time all those years ago, the samples all became ever so clear, at times you feel that they shadow the songs own beauty but Lenny Williams’ strong vocals and the passion he sings with soon eliminate such thoughts and you begin to enjoy the song for all it’s worth.

I understand that such songs do not deliver in the charts, but people should support even more, in order to encourage people to create such quality, it is this kind of originality that inspires someone such as Robin Thicke to make the music he does.

‘Cause I Love You is a timeless classic, a track that should and will be enjoyed and appreciated whilst also being Lil’ Wayne’s most personal song.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Drake & Lil’ Wayne

It is looking like Birdman’s forthcoming album ‘Always Strapped‘ might just be his best yet, with bangers like Got A Bitch ft. Rick Ross and Written On Her ft. Jay Sean, now leaks Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne & Drake, his albums heavily depend on features, so it comes to no surprise that his new effort will also be.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne Drake:

This is not anything special, in all honesty I think his collaboration with Rick Ross is far better, however, when you have heavyweights like Lil’ Wayne and man of the moment Drake on a track then something good has to come out of it and it certainly did in this case.

Drake steals the show as he is doing on most of his features, as much as I do not like to join in with anything that becomes over-hyped, I have to give Drake his credit where due, he backs his status up well, on this record, the Cash Money trio brag to the fullest, Lil’ Wayne’s verse is fairly standard which strangely balances with Birdman’s, leaving Drake to take the spotlight with his verse and chorus, the negative of this track is that you do not even realise Birdman has a verse, it kind of gets squashed in between the Young Money boys’ features.

Money To Blow will no doubt help balance the album out which at the same time will make the track standout more, it is not fair to be too critical on this song as it does what it was intended to do, it sounds like a sequel to the chart topping Always Strapped with a new cast member which really makes the difference. Expect more records of similar stature from Cash Money founder Baby aka Birdman.

I think my own expectations have got the better of me, it is a good song but the beat is not as epic as the previous release ‘Always Strapped’, nor the other release ‘Got A B****’, but the video is a good look, nothing too over the top, a good buzz single, with cameos from Jay Sean and Mack Maine, Cash Money are on a steep uprise, Lil’ Wayne went platinum, Jay Sean has now gone platinum, up next is Drake who is expected to go Platinum, Cash Money records are really at their peak, so look out for more big things.

Fáris Rating:
7.5/10

DRAKE – FOREVER ft. Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne & Eminem

The 2009 Monster anthem, taken from the soundtrack for NBA MVP LeBron James’ new movie receives the Hype treatment for it’s new video.

This is definitely something special, a momentus occasion in Hip-Hop, Drake has a buzz like no other, it began fading but this will certainly push right back up there again, Kanye West is dealing with more controversy after his VMA stunt, Lil’ Wayne is Lil’ Wayne and Eminem goes in to prove that he still is a major force in music full stop.

Hype Williams goes all out with this, full of effects, props, camera angles, the whole lot, Eminem really goes in, this is the Em that we love, cameos by Slaughterhouse seem to have some sort of effect, they just stand there but see it this way, Slaughterhouse are considered Hip-Hop’s most feared collective at the moment and they are standing ‘behind’ Eminem, it justifies his status.

Forever has a feeling to it, each artist brings their own presence to it and the video captures it nicely.
