Daniel Merriweather – Red

I have been hearing this song for a while now but never got a chance to hear it properly, I did today and it is one hell of a song.

In an industry compiled of many manufactured artists/bands and songs, it is always refreshing to hear something original, with that comes an alternative singer, for he does not fit a genre, yet his style and sound are so vast and varied that everyone finds something to like about him, his voice is so comforting that it feels like you have heard it before, yet loaded with emotion and full of soul, Daniel Merriweather is exactly what music is about and with Red, he delivers an emphatic anthem.

concept, lyrics and delivery, the melody is catchy, his voice is unique, overall a quality song from a quality artist.

La Roux La Wrong?

So today, I wake up and check my twitter, only to see many people commenting about La Roux apparently criticizing Tinchy Stryder, now if you have witnessed Tinchy Stryder’s career from the beginning, then you cannot help but to like, be happy for him and hope his success continues. Now, La Roux had an opinion before regarding R&B as “very kind of empty, like hollow and not rooted in anything good or healthy”, to an extent I can agree, of late R&B has not been as creative and soulful as it once was, everybody is entitled to their own opinion and so that matter faded (like her popularity among many), she also had an opinion about the lack of musical quality in contrast to amount of skin shown, which is a fair opinion again, I agree that the music should be the selling point not the appearance, she went on to say, “You shouldn’t be selling records because you’re half naked – if you want to do that be a porn star.” – I agree with that statement 100%. Thing is, I am was a fan of La Roux, the music was good, it was different, it was quality, but by making a statement regarding a hard working artist who has faced far more difficulties and hurdles in his career alone than she has in her life is extremely unfair and unacceptable.

La Roux lead singer Elly Jackson claimed Tinchy Stryder to be overrated:

“George Michael wrote ‘Careless Whisper’ when he was 17,” she told The Guardian. “I didn’t see Tinchy Stryder writing a song like that when he was 17, but he still gets the same praise.

Now, everybody is entitled to their own opinion but this seems like a Kanye West-like unnessacary rant, George Michael was and is an amazing talent, ignoring his private life in which he has faced his own trials and tribulations, he did offer some amazing songs, Careless Whisper is an evergreen classic and for him to write that at the age of 17 is remarkable, but Tinchy Stryder has come a very long way, he had his own battles in life, he is more of an inspiration to the youth than George Michael will ever be, in an era where kids are so easily lead astray, Stryder has continued to show focus and determination, not afraid of hard work and he is now receiving his much deserved success, both George Michael & Tinchy Stryder are two different individuals let alone artists, Elly Jackson has no idea of the difficulty Tinchy Stryder has had to face in his career alone, consistantly pushed aside for a more ‘acceptable’ act, many artists including miss Jackson and La Roux would have quit their profession ages ago under such scrutiny and stereotyping.

I think this desperate attempt for attention should be received with neglect for her talent as she seems to do so for Tinchy Stryder’s, he is extremely talented in his own right, as she is, it is a shame as I like her music. It is easy to look at her as overrated but we do not, we appreciate her and her talent as she should for other artists.

Mr Hudson – White Lies

Everyone’s favourite Englishmen returns with a new video for his second single ‘White Lies’.

Written and Co-produced by Music Kidz, White Lies is a real, heartfelt song, a unique concept, beautiful executed as this finished product, it is emphatic and meaningful, a beautiful track to say the least.

From his early work as part of Mr Hudson & The Library, it was always clear that feeling and emotion are heavy inspirations for his work, which he would then transcend into his music, it was witnessed with the release of the successful Supernova and is followed with this alternative effort. A style that can be considered R&B, pop or even indie, Mr Hudson has his own style, noticable with his appearance as well as his music, a mature sound, his take on situations is smart and extremely creative, a genius is in his own right.

The video is like his previous single, a unique visual, this time portraying different roles as both good and evil, the video is very retro and remeniscent of old sci-fi movies however he manages to offer a modern contrast which makes the video very relevant and and an enjoyable visual of vivid emotion and artistry.

Expect more boundary breaking creativity from Mr Hudson.

Verse – Buy You A Round (Up and Down)

Every year there is that big club tune, sometimes it comes more often, this year has had quite its share, that track that is capable of starting a party, this could be it.

Newcomer Verse with his debut Buy You A Round (Up and Down), this infectious club banger will have both the guys and girls moving, with its powerful neck-jerking drums and shoulder-bopping melody, lyrically catchy, a complete club banger no doubt. Verse has a hit on his hands, a good first single that will make a mark, certainly in the clubs.

Bashy – Life (Official Video)

The official video for the influential single Life is finally here:

This might just be my favourite track of his critically acclaimed album Catch Me If You Can (In Stores NOW).
Bashy shines the brightest when he gets serious with his topics, Life sounds like the realest thing he has ever written, touching on real situations with his witty and emphatic charisma.

The thing that seperates Bashy from the start is that coming from a Genre dominated with stereotyping and surrounded by negative hype, he was always a diverse artist, he was not taken seriously as he was not continously speaking on violence, he was more creative and broad, that however became his advantage as he stood out among the violent, tough life concepts which have become generic with Grime. Life is the definition of Grime, I already am dissapointed as I fear that it will not receive the real acknowledgement that such a strong and meaningful track deserves.

I love how he captures the reality that is mostly hidden and and left to remain in the dark and cold shadows of the far more materialistic and showbiz lives that we are constantly exposed to, Bashy’s raw delivery is an honest tail depict beautifully by this innovative video.

Life is Bashy’s official entry as one of the premier artists in the UK and not just Grime.

Rafroman – At Night

See the benefits of Channel Aka are that they play UK videos as well and not at hours where nobody is watching them like MTV base, so among some of not so good songs/videos comes a long something worth mentioning, At Night is exactly that.

I do not want to say too much, but the beat is a good sample, it fits, it has its own vibe, then the artist himself, he has lyrics, but his strongest point is his flow, a lot of people can put words together but their delivery lets them down, so to have both is obviously a positive.

Overall, this is a good song, I think the sample makes it so much more, but regardless, production to delivery, the final outcome is a real good song.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Drake & Lil’ Wayne

It is looking like Birdman’s forthcoming album ‘Always Strapped‘ might just be his best yet, with bangers like Got A Bitch ft. Rick Ross and Written On Her ft. Jay Sean, now leaks Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne & Drake, his albums heavily depend on features, so it comes to no surprise that his new effort will also be.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne Drake:

This is not anything special, in all honesty I think his collaboration with Rick Ross is far better, however, when you have heavyweights like Lil’ Wayne and man of the moment Drake on a track then something good has to come out of it and it certainly did in this case.

Drake steals the show as he is doing on most of his features, as much as I do not like to join in with anything that becomes over-hyped, I have to give Drake his credit where due, he backs his status up well, on this record, the Cash Money trio brag to the fullest, Lil’ Wayne’s verse is fairly standard which strangely balances with Birdman’s, leaving Drake to take the spotlight with his verse and chorus, the negative of this track is that you do not even realise Birdman has a verse, it kind of gets squashed in between the Young Money boys’ features.

Money To Blow will no doubt help balance the album out which at the same time will make the track standout more, it is not fair to be too critical on this song as it does what it was intended to do, it sounds like a sequel to the chart topping Always Strapped with a new cast member which really makes the difference. Expect more records of similar stature from Cash Money founder Baby aka Birdman.

I think my own expectations have got the better of me, it is a good song but the beat is not as epic as the previous release ‘Always Strapped’, nor the other release ‘Got A B****’, but the video is a good look, nothing too over the top, a good buzz single, with cameos from Jay Sean and Mack Maine, Cash Money are on a steep uprise, Lil’ Wayne went platinum, Jay Sean has now gone platinum, up next is Drake who is expected to go Platinum, Cash Money records are really at their peak, so look out for more big things.

Mz Bratt – Who Do You Think You Are

The UK’s leading emcee is more than a ‘rapper’, she is an artist, a role-model, an inspiration and more so a positive voice for females.

Who Do You Think You Are is her debut single and it is a banger!!

Produced by Terror Danjah, this multi-genre anthem has elements of electro and grime perfectly fitted within an edgy beat, capable to start any party, the synths are well placed upon a hard-hitting beat allowing Mz Bratt to shine with her lyrics and evident charisma.

I like the video a lot, it is youthful, fun and portrays the song’s overall feeling, with it’s vibrant scenes and bright colours, this visual beautifully compliments the song. With cameos from the likes of Superstar in the making Bluey Robinson, Terror Danjah, Wretchroboy Wretch 32, Bashy, DJ’s Ras Kwame and Viz, Double S, Cyko Logic and Donae’o among others, a great video to contrast a great song.

I expect big things from Mz Bratt, capable to shine as bright in the mainstream as she has done within the underground circuit, this track deserves even more recognition, (you know a song is good when even as a guy you find it catchy). She is a strong woman, who carries herself well, an inspiration to many young girls around the world, a far better role model than the likes of Brittany Spears and Beyonce (You can tell them I said that). Mz Bratt has every reason to succeed at the highest level, her recent FREE mixtape ‘Give it to em vol. 2’ is a small indication of the talent she possesses fused with her easy to love character, I have not even mentioned the fact that she is absolutely stunning, this naturaly beauty and her natural talent is definitely set to make her mark within the industry.
