Master Shortie – Bringing It Back

UK’s Master Shortie has made quite the step since his first single Rope Chain, as an independant artist, his debut album ADHD has received great responses, his single Dead End is a OneFáris favourite, here is the new single, Bringing It Back:

The single represents Master Shortie and his unique style for its simple feel-good factor, With Master Shortie being a diverse individual it is safe to expect the same from his music, Bringing It Back is no exception. The concept is nice, it is light-hearted and even up-lifting, appealing to a range of audiences, this will no doubt help keep Master Shortie in prominence.

The video is a perfect visual aid for the audio, contrasted well with the retro graphics blended with futuristic detail, although the Back To The Future featured DeLorean would have been more ideal, but it was refreshing to see the famous Knightrider’s Kit vehicle.

Master Shortie is rapidly rising as one of the leading artists within the UK, offering a diverse sound and style capable to transcent smoothly into mainstream recognition, the potential is vast for the young talent so expect more as he continues to make his mark in the music industry.

Voltage – Working Overtime ft. Double S, Brutal & Dot Rotten

The UK has a rapidly rising scene, with the new breeds are proving their worth, among them are four talented beings in the form of Voltage, Double S, Brutal and Dot Rotten. They unite on this underground classic.

Voltage is super talented as an emcee, I have seen many of his freestyle sets and he has always been consistent, a focused artist, Voltage backs his undeniable talent with a strong work rate, bringing Double S who surprises many by singing but he pulls it off well, Brutal and Dot Rotten add their own flare to the track providing depth at the same time.

Each artist has gone on to establish themselves as strong forces within the industry, expect to hear more from Voltage as he looks to further establish himself as a permanent fixture in the scene.

GMTA – Summertime

Ozzie B and the Great Minds Think Alike (GMTA) collective offer you the perfect track to end your summer on, better yet, the perfect track to look back and remember the good times you have had this summer with their new song ‘Summertime’.

This song has so much feeling to it, you cannot help but to feel good listening to this one, a really good effort from GMTA, the video directed by Creeping East entertainment really captures the essences that the song delivers, staying true to the track, Creeping East’s visuals represent the song nicely. the combination of voices and character gives that friendly enviroment vibe, Lady Shivz soulful tone provides a sultry element, Money Bags comes correct with a laid back but on point verse, the underrated emcee proves why GMTA are such a unique collective, personally I feel that I do not have to say much as the song speaks for itself, definitely a summer smash that will be scorching even in through winter.

“Shout out to GMTA..Zed, Bags, Lip E, Shivz, Drama, Knowledge and the whole camp”

Jay-Z – A Star Is Born ft. J. Cole

Taken from Jay-Z’s recent success Blueprint 3, this track stands out for many reasons.

A Star Is Born, produced by Kanye West & NO I.D, is a part dedication to all the successful emcees to have come through, whilst being a statement of Jay’s longevity as an artist, as many of those mentioned have not reached the same amount of consistent success as the Brooklyn legend, however this track is also the official ROC nation introduction of J. Cole

J. Cole is an extremely talented emcee, although names such as Kid Cudi, Drake and Asher Roth are often mentioned as saviours of Hip-Hop, they are talented but J. Cole is pretty much the definition of Hip-Hop, best described as Jay-Z and Nas in one, J. Cole’s ‘the warm-up’ mixtape helped create a stronger foundation for him as an artist, his only negative is that he might be too good for mainstream, but with Jay-Z taking him under his wing he is in the best position, he reminds me of Jay-Z with his clever wordplay and distinctive flow. In a ‘passing the torch’ manner, Jay-Z introduces J. Cole on this track and he does not disappoint, he takes this oppurtunity in both hands, this is a similar position to when Kanye West featured on Blueprint 2, however Kanye’s verse was quite dissapointing and lacked the charisma and metaphors that we hear from him now, so it is quite amazing if you think how much J. Cole will improve, already good enough to go against some of the best, he is one of the sparks in the bright future of Hip-Hop.

Wiz Khalifa – Get Some

Wiz Khalifa has been extremely consistent with his music, he has not received the same exposure as the likes of Wale and Drake, however, with their success creating intrest in the younger artists, Khalifa’s consistency has kept him prominent and in line to get the respect and acknowledgement that he deserves.

Get Some is a good example of Wiz Khalifa, the beat is diverse, the chorus is more of a dance sound with a pitch-altered sample, whereas the main body of the track is a modern electro meets hip-hop base on which he does not hesitate to get lyrical, but this track is more about feeling than talent so he does hold back.

Wiz Khalifa is who the likes of Bow Wow and Soulja Boy aim to be, somebody who is ‘cool’, accepted by a variety of audiences, You can see the impact he has had on Soulja Boy, I say that because Wiz Khalifa has been around for a while, just underground and I guess with Soulja Boy being a mainstream artist, he is making it acceptable for someone like Wiz to breakthrough.

This track is not the best I have heard, but it is different, something that relates to the artist Wiz Khalifa himself.

A song more representing Khalifa’s presence as an emcee is Dreamer:

KANYE WEST ..How Could You Be So Heartless?

Okay, so I know there is a lot of talk about this, it is not the first time Kanye Has done something outragious at an awards show, to be honest we expect it now, it has entertainment values, However, surely he crossed the line this time.

I am a Kanye West fan, therefore I am dissapointed, Taylor Swift did not deserve it, you see how genuinely happy she was to receive her first VMA award, Beyonce has a fair few already, regardless, I just think that Kanye West has let the accolades get to him, it is strange because on one side it was complete wrong, on the other I understand that Kanye is extremely passionate about his music and he is not afraid to voice an opinion, maybe his approach could have been far better, with fame and success comes a lot of responsibility, he can be forgiven but he has forever tarnished Taylor Swift’s ‘moment’.

He has apologised but that is up to Taylor Swift to accept, you have to admit that the random outburst does possess some comical value and who knows all this publicity that it is getting, maybe Mr West has done Taylor a favour, sympathy could lead to boosted record sales.

In response to his behavior, Kanye issued the following apology on his blog this morning:

“I’m sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom [Andrea]. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers!

I’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment! Beyonce’s video was the best of this decade!!! I’m sorry to my fans if I let you guys down!!!!! I’m sorry to my friends at MTV. I will apologize to Taylor 2mrw. Welcome to the real world!!!! Everybody wanna booooo me but I’m a fan of real pop culture!!! No disrespect but we watchin’ the show at the cribe right now cause.

I’m still happy for Taylor!!!! Boooyaawww!!!! You are very talented!!!!! I gave my awards to Outkast when they deserved it over me… That’s what it is!!!! I’m not crazy yall, I’m just real. Sorry for that!!! I really feel bad for Taylor and I’m sincerely sorry!!! Much Respect!!!!!”

Lowkey & Faith SFX – Alphabetical Assasin

A concept originally heard by the self proclaimed ‘Saviour of Rap’ Papoose with Alphabetical Slaughter, UK emcee Lowkey offers his version.

With beatbox extrodinaire Faith SFX providing the platform, Lowkey stands up and delivers a lyrical onslaught as he runs through the alphabet. I like this, it is a good effort to say the least, Faith SFX’s talents are already known, one of the best if not the best at what he does, his name is known throughout the scene, his single Passion Fruit displayed his range of ability more, Lowkey is more respected underground and so he is not as widely known, however those that do know, are in no doubt of his ability and so together they offer a force to be reckoned with.

Here is the original Papoose – Alphabetical Slaughter:

Which one do you prefer?

here is a lil’ bonus for you,

Frisco – Eyes On You

Frisco is back with a funky-inspired track.

With tracks like Kyla – Do You Mind and Egypt – In The Morning being played heavily across the UK club scene, Frisco joins Ruff Sqwad’s Dirty Danger in representing the guys.

Eyes On You, is a simple track, the concept is pretty simple and fully justifies the statement ‘less is more’, I can see this being a big success in clubs, Frisco is fully representing with this banger. More about feeling than content, this is something new and different from the Tottenham resident, but Frisco has always had a presence on track and this is no different, there is no over the top use of autotune, it is all done with simplicity and it comes of well, he is not singing completely, it is a good blend, the beat has elements of funky and grime embedded and that helps it fit in whilst standing out at the same time.

RIP Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996)

A small tribute to one of the greats..

Some Consider Tupac Shakur to be the greatest rapper ever in the history of the genre, whether that is the case, he definitely was the most influential, he is the pinnacle when you consider the ’emcee’. As a fan of ‘Pac, I learnt rather than followed, he taught us a lot and although many look at the negative effects, it cannot be denied that he kicked down doors and broke windows for us whilst teaching us how to act once we get in, they say ‘you don’t know what you have until it’s gone’ and Tupac’s death is no different to this statement.

RIP Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996)

One of the most influential voices in music period, Tupac brought real life dilemmas to the forefront through his talent.

His story is sad if you look at it in detail, although seen living it up, he was really making the most of whatever time he had left on Earth, many people close to Shakur mention that he always spoke, not just on record, of his death, although his infamous ‘beef’ with fellow rapper Notorious B.I.G. is one of the more mentioned events in his life and career (during which he gave us the greatest ‘diss’ record of all time, Hit Em Up), the actual struggles he conquered, the trials and tribulations, the negativity which he successfully battled through, they are proof of the greatness that he represents, they are inspiration for us all.

RIP the rose that grew from concrete.

RIP the man who shall live on through his music
