Oh No It’s Marvell again!!..

So we already know that the UK has an plethora of talent, some we have not even heard yet, some however have been grinding and putting in the work for a while now, when we talk about the best the usual names come up, Ghetts, Wretch 32, Scorcher, Kano, Klashnekoff, Tinchy Stryder, Wiley, Skepta, JME, I can go on, but in recent times a new wave of artists have come through and have been seeing success in a shorter space of time, could it be because the ones before have made it easier or because they are more talented, I say both.

At the top of this new wave many will say is Chipmunk, an artist who in a short space of time has made it to the top in terms of talent and recognition and i’m sure there will be plenty to follow. However, I raise the question, who is the best group to come up in recent times?

For those that know, well done, as for those that don’t know, allow me to introduce you to Marvell, a trio of equally talented emcees, that are more than just three kids that can rap, Marvell consists of Shocka, Vertex and Double S, individually each one is talented, has a persona of his own, bringing something fresh to the industry.

What I like about them is the fact that they appear so genuine, this is how they are, there three down to earth guys, confident in their ability but appreciative of what they have.

So many times i hear them and think “Yeah Double S is my favourite”, then i’m listening and i’m like, “actually, it’s all about vertex, no wait..shocka”, the best thing is to appreciate what the three bring to the table, each one compliments the other..

..The idea of trying to work out which one is better and then realising that together they’re just a phenomenon. reminds me of another collective known as The Movement, which then brings us to:

The best thing in my opinion about Marvell is that they are three friends that possess a talent and a love to do this, they were not manufactured, they do this from the heart, the love of music and you sense that with their movement as they continue to make a name for themselves in this industry, in a genre where constantly stereotypes are put before the truth, the youth are looked upon in a negative light, these guys are doing something positive, being role-models for the even younger, showing a better path, growing up I never got the help and guidance, always put down, they will get it too but they’ve seen their path and nobody can take them off it, Marvell deserve a lot of respect and deserve more than they get the way that they work, definitely inspiring and motivational!

D-Boy – Loveless

I came across this track and artist even after interviewing the singer Sef, looking into it, I came across this track and I’m actually feeling it, featuring Sef himself so obviously i’m biased to the chorus as i’ve been a big fan of Sef since So Solid days.

The track is good but what is best about it is the fact that it documents a real life issue and D-Boy really comes across well, for what it represents, Loveless is a good tune and deserves more exposure.

NOW, whoever knows me, knows I’m a big Wretch 32 fan, so to find out that Wretch 32 and sef are on the same track, I can’t even explain my reaction when i found out about this song.

compared to the first version this is more serious, Wretch 32 brings more to your ears than just words, metaphors and a recognizable voice, Wretch 32 brings feeling, remeniscent of his track ‘My Life‘ (click the link to hear), Wretch 32 is truely a gifted emcee, and he demonstrates this in Loveless, many can put words together but only few can convey feeling and emotion. The video is different too, together with the track it stands out, I feel that anything I say does not represent the song to its fullest, emotional to say the least, it is honest and emphatic, the scene and music in general needs more songs like this.

Young Jeezy – Don’t Do It

One of my favourite tracks from Young Jeezy’s latest album ‘The Recession’, Track 15 ‘Don’t Do It’, has Jeezy’s portrayal of his battle with ‘selling out’, looked up to by the streets, over the past few years with his three albums, Young Jeezy has become a voice for the streets, however, many have been in his position and sold out for fame and fortune, this is where Young Jeezy say’s he wont. “Jeezy Don’t Do It, Never ever, Never ever”, that line there says it all. The track is Jeezy assuring those that depend on him that he won’t go that route.

The video is a good look, it is dark yet entertaining at the same time, following the lyrics about Jeezy visiting his friend in jail. Director Gabriel Hart understands the tracks instrumentation as he has the violins being played in the video, it is cleverly contrasted and really emphasises the track itself for all it is worth.

For me the best thing about the video is the profile of Young Jeezy himself, he has come along way since his first tapes under the name Lil’ J, even as Young Jeezy, from Soul Survivor (his first official single) to this current track, he has come along way, many rappers, many artists even have come and gone yet Jeezy remains a prominent fixture in today’s hip-hop. towards the end of the video, quite the statement is made as we see posters of Nas – Illmatic, Jay Z – Reasonable Doubt and Tupac – All Eyez On Me (All 3 undeniable classics), there is an empty space between Jay n Pac and Jeezy’s poster for the recession is put up between them, solidifying Young Jeezy and the album The Recession’s status among hip-hop’s legacy.

Snoop Dogg – Snoop Dogg Millionaire

West Coast king Snoop D-O-Double-G jumps on a dub-step track, the thing is..it sounds good, something new and fresh, produced by Wild Animals and Chase & Status, Snoop Dogg Millionaire features Tanvi Shah, Snoop is recognized globally and recently made an appearance on a Bollywood soundtrack for the film ‘Singh is Kinng’, so I guess its no surprise that this track has materialized.

Content wise, It’s tough talking Snoop talking about his rise to the top, production side of things it is nothing to advanced, but the blend of Tanvi Shah’s vocals really set it apart from anything else giving the song its own lane. After selling Multi-Platinum albums, appearance in movies, and his own range of TV shows, Snoop Dogg really has the license to go wherever he desires with his creativity and I just hope that this is not a one-off and that there is more experimental tracks to come.

Musiq Soulchild – SoBeautiful

One of the most gifted artists of our time, Musiq Soulchild is back with the third single from his fifth album ‘OnMyRadio’, the track ‘SoBeautiful’ reminds me of earlier Musiq material such as ‘Aimewitue’ and ‘You Be Alright’, which were considered classics from his debut album ‘Aijuswanaseing’. SoBeautiful has Soulchild raising the falsetto to let his lady know just how much he feels for her,
“Girl don’t You know your so beautiful
I wanna give all my love to you girl
Not just tonight but the rest of your life
I wanna be always here by your side”
,
that chorus says it all, it is simple in terms of word play, which lately I feel is the best approach for real meaningful soul songs, they appeal to such a wide range of people, many can relate and the song feels so much more honest in comparison to the generated R&B tracks we hear today. The simplicity of the song is furthermore boosted with the production itself, I use the word simple in regards to the heavy-synths and complicated drum pattern combinations that we’re exposed to with most tracks, SoBeautiful offers easy listening with its melody driven tempo, the piano intro starts it off and then the drum kicks in to emphasise Musiq Soulchild’s voice as he starts,
Your my baby
My lover, my lady
All night you make me
Want you it drives me crazy
I feel like you
Were made just for me babe
Tell me if you
Feel the same way”
,
the snare added and all in all it fits perfectly as Musiq’s voice carries the song to the chorus where more instruments are introduced, these instruments are introduced again, leading towards to the end the song, where it becomes far more emphatic and really delivers the feeling across to the listener, ‘SoBeautiful’ is one of many classic Neo-Soul tracks to come from Musiq Soulchild who never disappoints his audience and I recommend this song to anyone that likes real music.

Joel Ortiz – Move On (Remix)

What would happen if 4 talented MC’s came together for the love of music?

…That is where Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9 and Crooked I come in, together they form the collective Slaughter House, each has been through his own fare share of situations in regards to acceptance, record labels and life itself, so together they prove to be a force to be reckoned with.

Move On is the first video released by the collective and it is aimed at those that have nothing else to ask but about previous situations, like in Joel Ortiz’s case, his release from Dr Dre’s Aftermath records. Each emcee, talks about their past situation whilst displaying the lyrical ability that sets them apart from your average rapper.

Have a look and tell me who you think took it on this one, for me I would say Crooked I.

Slaughterhouse as a collective and a movement is something refreshing and much needed in Hip-Hop

HeatWave – Find You Now ft. Ashley Wikes

Heatwave has the right name, because his songs literally are a wave of heat!!

Many will say that this song sounds similar to the generic sounds our charts are flooded with, but that is never a problem, it is when a song is copying everything else and is not even worth listening, This however sounds good!

It has a good concept, lyrics and feels good to sing along to and not just hear, it has that mid-tempo where it can be played in the club and on the radio and be just as emphatic.

Heatwave is certainly another to keep an eye or I should say ear out for!

Bluey Robinson – Just Think of Me

There are two versions to this, I personally prefer the live version. The kid has got a voice on him, lyrically this song really makes sense, it has so much feeling to it, in terms of feeling i compare it to Ne-Yo – So Sick, you know how you’re upset but the song helps you accept it and not feel so bad.

This is the live version that was initially a warm up, so imagine what you would hear when he actually records it for real! ..’Think of Me’ like the singer himself has a lot of potential so keep an ear out for both in the near future.

GLC – The Big Screen ft. Kanye West

I really like this song and the video is good too, its different, the song sounds like nothing you’ll hear on the radio at the moment, Big Screen has a movie feel to it, and Kanye comes through on point as always.

The Big Screen is the first single from the benefit compilation for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum: True To The Game.

Baring that in mind, the video has GLC and Kanye West playing baseball players at a lavish upscale party with ladies throwing themselves at them, Big Screen has a classic feel to it and i think will be a platform for GLC to make more of a name for himself.
