Comedian Kevin J ..UK Stand Up

In recent times, the UK urban scene has seen a major merging of artists, this has helped the scene rise higher, as they say ‘strength in numbers’. Along side musicians and artists themselves, DJ’s and comedians have been sharing support with the scene, most notably the likes of Ace & Vis and comedians Eddie Kadi and Kevin J.

Kevin J is considered the protégé of fast rising comedian Eddie Kadi, supporting him at shows and in cameos on music videos (such as Bashy – Ransom ft. Scorcher & Wretch 32).

Many of the top comedians happen to be of African decent, when mentioning the greats, the names Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphey, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle come up every time, in the UK, we have Richard Blackwood, Kojo, Slim and Paul Chowdhry (the recent being of Indian heritage), Paul became one of the first comedians to branch into their category with his youthful appeal as well as the ethnicity based similarities, with so many blends of cultures in recent times, many audiences are now equally accepting and understanding of the humour as well.

Kevin J, is a comedian on the rise, Richard Blackwood is quoted as to saying, “He has that X factor”, Kojo, Slim and Eddie Kadi have all praised him, his honest character and relevant humour have had audiences of all races in hysterics wherever he performs.

He manages to capture that essence of relevance and youth, he is not afraid to put himself in the forefront of his jokes, yet he gains more respect for the simple factor that he pulls the jokes off like a veteran, composed, professional and absolutely hilarious!!

Kevin J recently appeared on Kojo’s Comedy Fun House on MTV Base, it was an open-mic style audition, nobody knew what to expect, he was after a good act and all the pressure was there, Kevin came out and brought the house down with an awesome set, I was laughing after he had finished (embarrassing to admit but proves how good he is), he is definitely a comedian on the rise, one that will be in your favourites real soon.

Marvell ..UK Stand Up!!

I’ve been raving about Marvell for a while now (Check the previous posts), I’m not even talking about UK, globally there are not that many (if any) groups that can entertain as well as these three.

There are no stereotypes about these guys, for a while now Grime and Urban music itself has been kept away from the mainstream, reasons such as violent content and negative influences were placed upon the scene and it’s range of artists, however, here we have three young and extremely talented artists, they could so easily be attracted by and follow the drug selling lifestyle that many kids are drawn to, yet they are making a difference, Marvell are an inspiration for youths, they represent, talent, unity and the saying that ‘hard work pays off’, they deserve to be recognized as a mainstream act without a doubt.

Dot Rotten ..UK Stand Up!!

This has been up on Youtube for a while but not everyone seems to know of it, therefore I decided to share it with you all (as part of a new segment ..’UK Stand Up!!’)

Dot Rotten is one of the brightest prospects in grime (and UK music in my opinion), as we know the new breed are certainly making waves throughout and at incredible speed (for example: Chipmunk and Marvell), I believe that they are taking full advantage of the doors that the artists before them have helped open, regardless, the young talent in recent times has cast a shadow over some of those before them.

This is an example of what our country has to offer, Dot Rotten on the Tim Westwood show, No gimmicks, no rehearsals, just a real guy and real lyrics, the level of talent is incredible, concept, lyrics and flow, I’ve watched this clip uncountable times, it already has 96,130 views and rising.

Many label heads will watch this and judge on appearance and tone of voice, but someone who appreciates music will understand and see the talent! ..Support the rising scene and the plethora of talent that we have in the UK.

Lee Brasco – Drastic Measures Vol.2

Downloaded this the other day and from the first track I’m more of a fan than before, you sense the realness, there are no gimmicks, this is Lee Brasco being himself and nothing else.

1. Maximum Profit
“No talking, No intro”..Brasco goes straight in, a hustler’s anthem if you may, Maximum Profit has Lee Brasco rides the beat like a surfer on a wave, a heavy production and Lee Brasco does the beat justice, it’s real, it’s catchy, it’s inspirational even, the confidence is there with the lyrics to back it.

2. Lee Brasco Activity
This was interesting, you get to hear more of his personality, the confidence is still there, more so in fact. I felt like it had a comical edge to it, I’m a fan of the ‘Activity’ tracks and this is a really good version.

3. Not Like U

As the tracks progress you get more of Lee Brasco in the sense of persona, charisma and lyrical ability, this track offers the lot and you just can’t help but like him, it is entertaining and good to listen to.

4. HeadTurner (Remix)

The beat stands out from the first three, a lot slower and more spaced out, but once again Lee Brasco shows you his versatility by controlling the track with a different flow.

5. We Don’t Roll
From the drop I was loving the beat and at this point I was starting to look for negatives in Lee Brasco, however, the Ruff Sqwad represent came through, even more confident, more ‘swagger’, aggressive but the calm-felt chorus balances it extremely well, one of my favourite tracks from Drastic Measures Vol.2.

6. Extra
I’ve mentioned versatility a few times already and I have to once more, the beat is a Rock sample containing a heavy electric guitar piece throughout and you guessed it, Brasco delivers once again.

7. Wanna Blow
More of a laid back track, seriously, if anybody doubted Lee Brasco before the track, they sure will changed their mind after hearing this mixtape. Wanna Blow has Lee Brasco talking about his desire to rise to the top, another new flow, yet equally entertaining.

8. The Chase
On ‘The Chase’, Lee Brasco gets grimey, his ability to tell a story is on point, the beat offers him the perfect canvas as he paints a lyrical picture, you can’t help but to believe everything he says, as he takes you on a journey with his flow. Another standout track.

9. This Way
‘This Way’ follows the serious side of ‘The Chase’, touching on harsh realities we face in the rough streets many of us have been exposed to, as well as offering a mature vision and expression of emotion.

With This Way being the last track, it really rounds up the tape but the best thing about it is that you want to hear more. Overall this is a good effort, Lee Brasco offers versatility and truth in a diverse yet entertaining manner, Everyone should have a listen.

DaVinChe – Riding For Love ft. Cleo Sol & Bashy

Considered by many as the country’s best producer, DaVinChe offers us yet another anthem with Riding For Love.

Featuring Cleo Sol & Bashy, Riding For Love is set to be a smash if not justify DaVinChe’s position at the top, Cleo Sol (as heard on Tinie Tempah – Tears) is another talent on the rise and really puts her twist on his track, her voice has a presence and really makes the song her own in a way, Bashy provides a charismatic verse that touches the subject whilst being light-hearted, it fits the song well. After hearing Riding For Love, I am looking forward to hearing more from DaVinChe.

Along with Riding For Love, DaVinChe has another version, another anthem but this time for the streets.

Rider ft. Keedo, Steelo, Ghetts & JME:

Personally, Ghetts stole the show with his verse, which to be honest is expected from one of the best the UK has to offer, Keedo was impressive with a sharp flow and witty rhyme, JME delivered as always and helped round the track up nicely, I feel that the beat has not been fully justified but none the less it is a good blend of artists and will no doubt be well received.

Bashy – Millionaire

After the success of ‘Ransom‘, Bashy continues to push forward as one of the countries premier artists, this time with the release of ‘Millionaire’.

Bashy is certainly working hard and the results are proof, the track itself possesses a party vibe, it is a good effort, the best thing is that it sounds so versatile, it has the grime feel to it as well as sounding good enough for commercial, Millionaire is definitely going to be a big track for Bashy, I’ll be surprised if I do not hear it on commercial radio.

The video contrasts the song well, it is humorous, fast and colourful, enjoyable to say the least, the dance performance towards the middle of the video is really good, I did not know Bashy had moves like that, so i applaud the choreography.

Overall, Millionaire is an anthem, one to reach if not surpass similar heights as Bashy’s previous release ‘Black Boys’. Millionaire has me wishing Bashy all the success he strives for as it is much deserved and I’m looking forward for to the release of his album ‘Catch Me If You Can’ (available 1st June).

Rick Ross – All I Want ft. The Dream

The Boss returns with his official second single taken from his No.1 charting album ‘Deeper Than Rap’.

All I Want ft. The Dream:

A continuous ‘rap beef’ with heavyweight 50 Cent helped propel Rick Ross further and gain more promotion, it also became a channel for Rick Ross to release ‘street’ singles whilst putting out the softer material for chart success, a good combination as it kept both sets of fans happy.

With ‘All I Want’, Ross enlisted the help of man of the moment ‘The Dream‘ (fresh off the success from his sophomore album ‘Love Vs Money’) and producer Tricky Stewart, the beat possess that feel-good factor, with the combination of drums and a soft but catchy melody on which The Dream provides yet another infectious hook for the fans to sing along to (remember ‘Cookie Jar‘?), The Boss flows over the beat well about his desired lady, with more lavish and luxurious rhymes, but it is all put together neatly, resulting in a potential summer smash for the self-proclaimed Biggest Boss.

Swiss – Cry ft. Sharifa

Who remembers this one?

Crazy Michael Jackson sample, lyrically on point and the content is highly applauded.

Swiss had been with So Solid Crew from the start but fans, audiences and peers alike began to see him shine with vocals on both Oxide & Neautrino – Rap Dis and So Solid’s ‘Broken Silence‘ (Produced by Mr Shabz, who is also the founder of Music Kidz and have recently inked a deal with Jay-Z’s ROC Nation label), the producer/rapper showed that he was just as gifted on the mic as he is with the beats.

After being acknowledged as a true artist, an emcee with style and substance, Swiss blessed us with ‘Cry’, the song’s concept helped inspire many and played its part in encouraging Bashy to create the anthem that is ‘Black Boys‘.

I don’t want to say too much, enjoy the track and let me know what you think, Swiss is one of the truest artists in our country and with Music Kidz now with Jay-Z’s ROC Nation, I as a fan first hope that Swiss gets to prove to a larger audience how good he really is with more good music.

Sef – Need A Hero ft. Swiss

The former So Solid crew singer is back to claim his spot as one of the UK’s finest talents.

After creating a buzz with the single ‘Out of the Ghetto’, Sef has truly delivered with the follow up ‘Need a Hero’. Upbeat and definitely one to have the heads nodding, using a video game-sounding sample over a slick beat adding a few synths and strings, with the singer lacing the beat with his vocals, letting his damsel in distress know that he’s here to save her from her heartbreak. The addictive chorus just flows smooth as he sings:
“Girl You Need A Hero..Someone who is just like me, A Hero..Who can give you what you need, I’m just trying to show ya, Baby I’m the one for ya, I was sent just to love ya, I’m your Hero!”
Featuring the additional vocals of emcee Swiss (Also of So Solid fame) who from the sounds of it has stepped his game up, certainly giving the song more depth. ‘Need a Hero’ really stands out amongst the majority of the current commercial R&B songs in this country. Certainly a hit for Sef and the Music Kidz team who are back with a banger!!

..They are shooting a video for it very soon, Shout out to Shabz the professor, Sef and the whole of Musik Kidz, keep making those hits!!
