Tinchy Stryder – Shake Me ft. Rapid

Since the last review of his album ‘Catch 22‘, I have listened to it more and a couple of the other tracks have begun to stand out more, one of them being ‘Tryna Be Me‘, Co-Produced by Dirty Danger and Rapid, featuring the multi-talented Ruff Sqwad.

I like the classic Ruff Sqwad feel this track has, it is a major record but it’s underground relevance is in full effect.

An instant favourite of mine is Shake Me produced by Top 3 selected producer himself Rapid, Rapid features on this track as well.

With Catch 22 being Tinchy’s album it is refreshing to hear another voice and Rapid really makes the most of it, a stand out on the track, definitely compliments Stryder. The beat itself is up-tempo, with a good blend of sounds, the synth is contrasted well by the live-sounding instrumentation, the singing ad-libs are amazing, I know they’re just ad-libs but they really give the song so much depth, over all the quality is really good, Rapid has been considered one of the best (if not THE best) producer in the Grime scene for a while now, with Shake Me he proves that his talents are just as able to conquer the mainstream.

Many people do not actually know that Rapid is more than a producer, he is a writer and vocalist too, a man capable to be an artist in his own right.

Black The Ripper – My Lyrics are Forever

During a recent trip to New York, I asked the locals which artists in the UK they knew about, I wanted if they have the same exposure that we have of their artists. The majority knew of Tim Westwood and used words to describe him that I can’t really say but you get the point, Dizzee Rascal it seems is the most famous prospect over there, I was hoping someone would say Wretch 32 or Ghetts, however that was not the case, for ages we have had Hip-Hop dedicated radio shows, our own awards ceremony ‘the Brits’ and ‘Mobo’ give out awards to more overseas artists than homegrown, the likes of Tinchy Stryder(that was before the recent awards) Ndubz and Chipmunk are changing that I agree, however if we can know about the likes of Currency, Wiz Khalifa and Slaughterhouse here in the UK then why do they not know of our talent?

There are a few reasons, their population is far larger which means more rappers, so everybody is too busy following what is ‘hot’ rather than having a real passion and allowing themselves to be naturaly inspired by a wide variety of influences. The Duo of Mega and Mayhem, better known as SAS were another name I heared a fair bit, could be due to their once affiliation with Dipset and Rocafella records, or just the fact that they have put the work in over there.

This article/review is to silence anyone who argues that the UK does not possess the talent or the fact that it is because of our dialect, as Americans have a different accent to us yet for years we have been listening and supporting.

After hearing this track, I felt the same feeling that I would get from listening to Wu-Tang, or even Rakim, Black the Ripper aka Samson takes it back, the production is Hip-Hop, it possesses the feeling of a classic, the potential is amazing, A real music fan anywhere in the world can appreciate this, Black the Ripper is talented and is clearly not phased by the problems many face to progress into mainstream, he celebrates the idea of being underground, using the internet to reach his audiences, he has come a long way through his own hard work and ambition, expect to hear a lot more of this artist because real talent can never be denied!

Dirty Danger – Ard Bodied

“Ard Ard Ard Ard…”

This track speaks for itself, it is literally Hard, best experienced in a club or on a good sound system.

Produced by Dirty Danger himself, the Ruff Sqwad soldier delivers a smash with Ard Bodied, the bass heavy beat is capable to get anyone dancing, you just cannot help but to nod your head to this, it is a street sounding feel-good anthem, “I’m not a flee boy, I’m a flee man”, With fellow Ruff Sqwad members Tinchy Stryder, Rapid & Slix all further establishing their status, Ard bodied will help Dirty Danger do no different, if not more. I have it on repeat, listening to it now as I write, it has something unique about it, consisting of segments capable to satisfy a range of listeners. Already being played on radio, Ard Bodied can do no wrong, with funky tracks such as Kyla – Do You Mind and Egypt – In The Morning heavily played in clubs across England, they encourage a positive vibe (more so for the ladies), Ard Bodied is one for the guys, it has such a strong feeling to it, definitely a song with an impact.

Dirty Danger has a hit on his hands with this infectious Grime meets Electric via funky anthem.

TINCHY STRYDER – SPOTLIGHT ft. TANYA LACEY

My favourite track from his new album – CATCH 22

The album itself is a fusion of Electronic, Grime and Alternative, it has many different elements to it, but they manage to fit together as a whole, a very energetic, feel-good album.

Tinchy Stryder – Spotlight ft. Tanya Lacey:

‘Spotlight’ is my standout track from the album, production wise, it is bass and synth heavy, electronic sounding instruments blended with sharp acoustic sounding drum kicks, there is a lot happening but it does not sound over the top, reminds me of an old Stryder favourite of mine, ‘Dance 4 Now’, it almost sets a scene, you do not need a dance for this, you just move with the vibe, it has a dark element to it, which helps Tinchy Stryder’s voice stand out and sound prominent, whilst the organ sounds compliment the track like a flame to a candle. Track 4 off Catch 22, Spotlight is another potential chart topper, I could not see many people disliking the song, it has so much positive energy, the beat is so well constructed and Stryder flows almost effortlessly over it with confidence and ease like only Tinchy Stryder can. Tanya Lacey’s vocals boost the track and provide an extra feeling, Spotlight perfectly captures Tinchy’s position as a star in today’s music industry and not just in the hood.

Tinchy Stryder – Dance 4 Now:

I have to admit, I was gutted not to find Finish Line ft. Sef (Produced by Music Kidz) on the final release,

however, It does not make the album any less, as Catch 22 is 18 tracks of cross-over frenzy, the album is cleverly crafted, there are a lot of behind the scenes situations that as an audience we do not know about, taking all that into consideration, this album is impressive. Tinchy Stryder will always represent Grime and UK music even he features on a Country song, this album shows how ahead of his time he really is, sure people will find negatives but that is the Catch 22 in itself, I think Tinchy Stryder has done enough in his career so far to earn him the respect and the chance to experiment with his sound, doing so, with Catch 22 he has not dissapointed.

Bashy – Your Wish Is My Command ft. H-Boogie

Bashy - Catch Me If You Can (OUT NOW)

Bashy - Catch Me If You Can (OUT NOW)

From the first listening of his new album ‘Catch Me If You Can’ it was evident that Bashy was trying to make a point, in an attempt to satisfy everyone and broaden his range of audience he created an eclectic album, those that followed Bashy’s rise obviously knew that the album would not be a dominantely grime album, he has always stood out for being witty and entertaining in a comical way, he sustained his presence in grime with the track (and video) Ransom (featuring Wretch 32 & Scorcher). Bashy then created a mini-anthem in the form of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. Your Wish Is My Command featuring H-Boogie (Estelle’s sister) was one of the tracks that stood out in the album as able to cross-over, its merged sounds and styles allowed it to cross over into different genres for more people to enjoy.

The beat itself is a techno meets funk saying hi to pop somewhere along the journey, Bashy gives the track it’s urban relevance, it is obvious that Bashy intended to create a feel-good fun song and I can see this doing well, as for the video, I think it’s funny, it is different, it has comical value, it stands out and should not have any trouble receiving play on TV, the track itself should become a regular on radio, fans sometimes do not understand how hard it is to please everyone, some fans would like to see urban artists continue to make ‘underground’ music, but in order to be successful as an artist and gain mainstream credibility, they have to extend their range, Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder for example. With ‘Your Wish Is My Command’, Bashy has tried to create an overall feeling, it is urban, both artists represent urban alternative, Bashy is not singing, he is rapping, it is just a creative piece of expression, I personally visioned a futuristic video for the song, in all honesty I do not think the current video fully justifies the track, but it is hilarious to watch.

Bashy has always been ‘different’ coming up as an artist, where most emcees would stick to underground then make the pop transition, Bashy has always had these elements to him so it is no surprise. Your Wish Is My Command will do well for him, he boasts a lively character and the video portrays that well.

Jason Lewis – Too Many Weave

It is a great time for the UK in terms of rising talents, the music scene with the likes of Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder dominating charts, Noel Clark and Adam Deacon to name a few are making waves within the film industry and then you have the comedians like Eddie Kadi, Kevin J and Channel AKA’s own Jazzie.

Among the ranks is comedian Jason Lewis, hilarious sketches and relevant comedy, Jason Lewis first burst onto the scene with his parody of Bashy – Black Boys:

An MTV show (The Jason Lewis experience) later he returns with the Boy Better Know – Too Many Man parody ..’Too Many Weave’:

Great to see more good comedy and comedians from the UK, with comedians such as Jason Lewis and Jazzie to add to the likes of Slim, Kojo and Paul Chowdhry the country has another reason to smile and laugh.

Wise words of wisdom with Megaman (So Solid)

With artists like Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder, Wiley and Chipmunk dominating the charts, the urban scenes are buzzing as more doors are opened, at the same time I think people should understand the originators, the pioneers who first turned that door handle, such as More Fire and before that, probably the biggest urban movement in the UK, the So Solid Crew.

During a recent video shoot, I had a chat with Megaman, who humble as ever explained his dream, desire and dedication, a man who has accomplished so much in terms of music and business, I felt it was only right that we share more wise words of wisdom from the So Solid captain himself (Along with Ozzie B).

Chipmunk signs to Major Label

UK’s own Mr Munk, better known as Chipmunk has announced that he has signed to major label Sony (Columbia) records.

The move has come whilst much anticipation for the release of his debut ‘I Am Chipmunk‘ continues, the Mobo Award winner has been risen from a little known emcee to one of the urban scenes (if not the country’s) biggest charting prospect, having already gained an overseas fanbase with releases such as Muhammad Ali, Beast (featuring Loick Essien) and Chip Diddy Chip, as well as reaching Number 3 in the charts with DJ Ironik on their Elton John collaboration ‘Tiny Dancer’.

Congratulations to Chipmunk himself and Always Recording who are now the second to reach major label status after Number 1 charting Tinchy Stryder inked his Star In The Hood imprint with Universal records.

The urban scene is rising and it is amazing to see, I can only see it rising further and look forward to seeing more success for our talent in the near future.

Tinchy Stryder – Number 1?

the question mark is because I think like everyone else in the scene that this new single has the potential to make that Number 1 spot.

Tinchy Stryder has always been the at the forefront of the Ruff Squad and Dappy is the most recognizable member of Platinum selling N-Dubz, so when you put them together, you are bound to get more than just a collaboration.

Tinchy Stryder has been in the game for a while now, his constant hard work has been paying off and after securing the number 3 spot with ‘Take Me Back’ featuring Taio Cruz, it is only right that the charts take him back and place him at the top spot, simply as not many people can say that they truely deserve it, Stryder can.

As for Number 1, it does not have the instant cathy factor that Take Me Back possessed, however it has the major feel, two of the country’s best talents coming together with a feel good song, they both add their own qualities and Dappy goes on to prove that he really is a force in the industry, I’m sure both have dealt with set backs and many laughing at the idea that they could have such impacts individualy in the music industry, with that, you can sense the eagerness, the hunger and the determination for Number 1 to be a number one.

I think this is just a start, for both Stryder and N-Dubz, both are talented enough to build upon their success so far and open the doors for more talent to shine through.

The single will be out 20th April, so you know to support that!

Jay-Z signs Music Kidz to ROC Nation!!

This is big news people,

Music Kidz, consisting of producer Mr Shabz (who is the founder of Music Kidz) & former Reelist producer K1, emcee Swiss and singer Sef (the trio that were behind many of the So Solid Crew’s hits), have been working hard with their group, production team, label and movement.

Proof of their hard work has come when Sef himself recently announced that Music Kidz has signed to Jay-Z’s new imprint ROC Nation, this is big news for the scene and the country, it means our hard work and talents are being recognized and with such an array of talent here in the UK, it is the next step, it shows the progression we are making, recently Jay Sean signed to the one and only Cash Money Records (Home to none other than Lil’ Wayne).

The first release I’m looking forward to and have been waiting for a while is Sef and his album ‘Every Piece of Me’, after releasing ‘Out of the Ghetto‘ and the soon to come ‘Need A Hero‘, Sef has proven that he has a voice to match some of the best R&B singers out there, having already worked with the likes of platinum selling Robin Thicke on the track ‘Tonite‘, as a fan of music it is increasingly frustrating to not hear his material and his name being mentioned among the greats.

Also, Swiss, how can anyone forget his heartfelt flow on So Solid Crew’s smash ‘Broken Silence‘, Swiss then gave us ‘Cry‘, so the soon coming album ‘One In A Million’ is still antiscipated the Music Kidz are capable of classics so it is only right that they venture with ROC Nation (one of the most expensive labels created) with the legend Jay-Z himself to create more of their own history.
